Panama City, Fla.— The Florida Department of Health in Bay County will commemorate National HIV/AIDS Aging Awareness Day with a FREE event. The Health Awareness event will be held on September 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore located at 1515 East 11th Street. National HIV/AIDS Aging Awareness Day is observed annually on September 18.

During the Health Awareness event information will be provided on the Habitat for Humanity Housing program, healthy living, WIC, smoking cessation, the sexual assault program and diabetes. Services will include FREE health screenings for HIV, Hepatitis C, blood sugar and weight. Students, family members and community members are all invited.

“Many people think of HIV and AIDS as a disease that affects younger people”, said Rick Vitale DOH-Bay HIV AIDS Program Coordinator, “but the reality is one in six new cases in the United States are people that are 50 and older.”

The CDC estimates that half of all people with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. are 50 and older. Although new cases contribute to these numbers, it is primarily due to effective HIV treatment. Older adults with HIV are developing multiple illnesses 10 to 20 years earlier than expected. These include; heart disease, cancers, diabetes, hypertension, kidney and liver disorders, osteoporosis and frailty. Older adults with HIV are also five times more likely to have depression.
